Alexander is known for treating every race as a new challenge and never rests till the last tire is over the finish line. Unfortunately, in the run-up to the Texas Motorsport Speedway Event, he had a minor accident in the Verizon IndyCar Series at Pocono on what is known as “The Tricky Triangle”. The race was scheduled for Sunday, August 21, but had to be moved to Monday, August 22 because of inclement weather and rain. Rossi was well up for a win here, but as he pulled back onto the track behind Kimball, Kimball crashed into Alexander who took out Helio and Alexander flew through the air. God was on their side as none were injured but it put paid to his podium finish dreams. Rossi commented that he was frustrated and disappointed, but that he would come back fighting.

Alexander Rossi is fast following in his mentor and sponsor’s footsteps – Mario Andretti – as becoming another American who could again win the Indy 500. As Sunday’s race gathered speed, Rossi was in the Fast Nine Shootout – these are the 9 drivers who got the highest scores for the last 4 laps of the May 29 race – setting a remarkable standard. Because he was positioned inside the last nine, he got moved down in the last of the qualifying races by Mikhail Aleshin. Alexander, therefore, moved up into Group 1 where his starting position was determined. In the last practice session, Alexander again took P1 well ahead of the pack in a lap of 230.064MPH

Well, he sure did that by finishing as the top rookie in Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, August 28! In addition, he has qualified as a participant in the 100th race in the Indianapolis 500. Sporting the same noticeable green Castrol EDGE Livery on the No 98 car, Rossi finished in 11th position adding another 19 points to the total for his road to the Championship. The race was full of incidents with other drivers, but Alexander was cool as a cucumber and finished in an excellent position – which was very tight – but he made it as the top rookie home! The course has a distance of 1,455 miles, and there are steep banks of up to 24 degrees together with a real broad section of road on which to race – however, all the other contenders dropped by the wayside as Rossi cruised to a first class finish.

This win has given Rossi a grand total of 346 so far in the long-term driver Championship race. Teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay is 2 points ahead of him. However, Rossi is still the top-notch rookie driver in the Championship. With his home race in Sonoma still to come, he has high hopes of finishing well at the top and bringing the Championship back home to California again. The last time California held the trophy was with Mario Andretti.
